• Jean-Michel Bernard is a special pianist who has found his place at the crossroads of musical genres. With a solid classical education and the freedom and expertise of the jazz greats, he is resolutely the pianist of cinema, with his unique mix of interpretation, composition and reinvention. The man Ray Charles - with whom he played for four years - described as “Genius”, or Lalo Schifrin as “Soul Brother”, has developed every talent in his immense career: composer, orchestrator, concert player, arranger and producer.
• From his encounter with Benny Goodman to his long-standing friendship and musical partnership with Michel Portal, classical clarinetist Paul Meyer has always kept the world of jazz within reach. The jewel in the crown of the world-famous Vents Français, a gifted instrumentalist with a series of awards to his name, and now also an international conductor (chief conductor in Tokyo and Mannheim, invited by orchestras all over the world), Paul Meyer makes his classical culture count, but he also likes to be led outside or elsewhere... as long as the music speaks to him in colour.
• The Film Song Affair is the natural meeting of two great masters, both guardians of temples with their doors and windows wide open. Two artists who have long since outgrown the desire to prove something and who want their music to be above all luminous and self-evident. They are total artists, with unlimited capacities and an ever-increasing curiosity, the kind of curiosity that leads to wonderful interfamilial encounters.
• Paul Meyer entrusted his unique cantabile to Jean-Michel Bernard, who invited him to the cinema, in a musical environment that also dares to become wild. To make up for the omission of the lyrics of these sublime film songs, almost all of them taken from The American Songbook, the song had to be able to surpass itself, to make the works vibrate despite everything, even tremble... and not to betray the spirit of the great films visited.
• This is the mission of reinvention that Jean-Michel Bernard has always set himself, as an alchemist of cultures, also a balancer between musical genres, especially when they are deployed on film; a mission that Paul Meyer has made his own on this project, without any violence.
